FAQS
WHAT IS MICROBLADING?
Microblading is a highly detailed and intricate permanent makeup technique that creates natural-looking hairlike strokes to give the illusion of a full and natural brow. These hair strokes are made with a manual tool that holds a small grouping of tiny needles in order to create shallow incisions in the brow area.
Microblading looks most natural on clients who have full brow hair and are looking to perfect their shape and add more fullness. The more fine your hair is, the more natural it will appear. This is NOT an ideal service for those with little natural hair, hair that is patchy, or coarse hair. Microblading heals best on young, normal/dry skin. Those with combination/oily or aging skin ARE NOT ideal candidates for microblading and are better suited for combination/hybrid or powder brows.
Many clients think that microblading is the only way to achieve “natural” results, however, unless a client is an ideal candidate, hybrid brows or powder brows would be a more natural-looking option for their particular skin type. It is also important to note that microblading, over time, can blur together if done improperly or if the client doesn’t take care of their brows. Being an ideal candidate and taking good care of your brows will ensure beautiful, long-lasting results!
WHAT IS A COMBINATION (AKA HYBRID) BROW?
A combination brow combines microblading strokes with tattoo machine shading. If you have naturally sparse brow hair or uneven brow growth, a hybrid brow is perfect for you! It is also ideal for those looking for a more defined or “filled in” look. We can add as much or as little shading as desired to give a variety of different looks! Hybrid brows are a great look for all skin types (including oily/aging skin) and heals very soft and natural!
WHAT IS A POWDER BROW?
A powder brow, also known as an “ombre” brow, has no hair strokes at all and is made up entirely of tattoo machine shading. This method is ideal for all skin types. When doing a powder brow, a single needle tattoo machine implants small dots of pigment below the skin. These dots are layered on top of each other until the desired amount of saturation is achieved. We can do a very soft amount of shading with no harsh edges for an ultra-natural look, or add more layers of shading on top of each other for a more defined, filled-in look. Powder brows can be completely customized to fit the client’s preferences!
A powder brow can be just as natural as microblading! If you have oily skin, large pores, uneven brow hair growth, or very coarse hair, microbladed strokes can look very unnatural and don’t always blend well with natural hair. In this case, a powder brow would give an even layer of color to the brow and heal to the perfect powder finish. Powder brows are NOT “sharpie brows” and, if done correctly, can have gorgeous, natural-looking results. Powder brows may look intense at first, but the results heal to a softer finish. If you fill in your brows every day and want the least amount of maintenance, powder brows are a great fit for you!
HOW LONG DO PERMANENT BROWS LAST?
Permanent makeup is designed to fade over time but is still considered a permanent cosmetic tattoo. Factors such as skin type, lifestyle, age, metabolism, medications, and pigment color affect the longevity of the tattoo. Sun exposure and tanning beds can greatly affect the rate at which these pigments are broken down. Following the provided aftercare instructions is critical to getting your best-healed results and helping your brows last as long as possible. Touch-ups are normal and EXPECTED for permanent cosmetics. Choosing the proper service for your skin type and following the aftercare instructions will lead to beautiful, long lasting results! Permanent brows can last anywhere from 1-3 years before needing any maintenance.
Please note that final results vary and CANNOT be guaranteed due to the nature of skin as it heals. A follow-up appointment is STRONGLY recommended 8-12 weeks after your initial session where we can assess your pigment retention and perfect your permanent makeup! I do not charge for 8-12 week touch-ups and am happy to offer this as a complementary service to ensure high-quality permanent brows.
AM I A CANDIDATE?
Unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate for permanent makeup. I want each of my clients to get the best results possible and not every circumstance accommodates that. The following list disqualifies you from currently receiving permanent makeup. With questions regarding your specific situation, please email me at inkbyash.wi@gmail.com.
PERMANENT COSMETICS CANNOT BE PERFORMED IF YOU:
WHICH FACTORS WILL AFFECT MY RESULTS?
Oily Skin: Increased oil production can cause hair strokes to blur and fade very quickly or not stick at all. If you have combination or oily skin, you are a candidate for hybrid or powder brows, but not for exclusive microblading.
Sun Exposure: Increased exposure to the sun or using tanning beds will cause premature fading.
Excessive Bleeding: Excessive bleeding during your procedure will greatly affect how your body retains pigment. Pinpoint bleeding throughout the procedure is completely normal, but excessive bleeding causes pigment to fade very quickly and heal ashy. While bleeding is not entirely in our control, it is important that you follow the PRE-APPOINTMENT instructions to help minimize bleeding. This includes avoiding blood-thinning medications, alcohol, and caffeine for 24 hours prior to your procedure.
Improper Pre- and Post-Care: Not following the given pre- and post-care instructions will greatly diminish your healed results. Follow all instructions exactly for the best results! I can only control what happens inside the tattoo shop so please come prepared beforehand and follow ALL instructions afterwards for the best results.
DOES IT HURT?
Pain tolerance levels vary but most clients report little to no pain during their procedure. I use topical numbing creams throughout your appointment to keep you comfortable. Most clients are incredibly relaxed during their appointment and sometimes even fall asleep!
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY APPOINTMENT?
Preparing for your appointment is JUST as important as following the aftercare instructions. Failure to follow pre-appointment instructions may result in you being sent home the day of your appointment. Please read the following instructions carefully! Coming fully prepared to your appointment means better healed results and a better overall experience.
PRE-APPOINTMENT INSTRUCTIONS:
You are welcome to come to your appointment with or without makeup on. We will be taking before/after photos, so come however you are most comfortable. If you regularly wear brow makeup, please come to your appointment with your eyebrow makeup on! This will give me an idea of what you're used to seeing when you look in the mirror.
Another great way to prepare for your appointment is to RELAX! Feeling nervous is normal. We are going to work TOGETHER to create your dream brows! Take a deep breath and get excited!
HOW SHOULD I TAKE CARE OF MY BROWS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?
At the end of your appointment, I will go over the aftercare instructions with you in detail. I will send you home with a card that explains all of the healing stages you will go through as well as how to take care of your brows and what to avoid in the following weeks. I also send you home with an aftercare cleanser and healing balm. Following the aftercare instructions is CRUCIAL to obtain the best results! Keep in mind when choosing an appointment date that direct sun exposure must be completely avoided for two weeks following your appointment. In other words, don’t get your brows done right before you go on vacation!
I’VE HAD MY BROWS DONE BEFORE BY ANOTHER ARTIST, WILL YOU DO THEM?
I will only go over another artist’s work if it is AT LEAST 90% faded. You MUST email pictures of your naked brows from multiple angles in natural lighting to inkbyash.wi@gmail.com to receive my approval before booking a cover-up appointment. All new clients TO ME are considered initial sessions, NOT touch-ups. I want to give my clients the very best and if I don’t think we can achieve the look you want with your existing work, I will give recommendations on which steps to take next.
DO I NEED A TOUCH-UP APPOINTMENT?
Yes! Permanent makeup is a two-step process and a touch-up is strongly recommended to get the best results. A touch-up is done 8-12 weeks after your initial session. This is where we assess your retention, perfect the shape and color, and add more dimension. Touch-ups are very important and add to the overall results and longevity of your brows.
WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY “ANNUAL” TOUCH-UP?
After your initial session and 8-12 week touch-up are completed, most clients are able to go 1-3 years between refreshers! The longevity of your brows will depend on your skin type, lifestyle, and how well you take care of them. Things like excessive sun exposure and some skincare products can shorten the life of your permanent makeup and cause them to fade. Be sure to follow the aftercare instructions provided by me to keep your brows looking amazing for as long as possible!
Before booking an “annual” touch-up, it is important to let your brows fade at least 50-60%. Letting the previous pigment fade allows us to keep that pigment looking fresh in the skin! If the ink in your skin from your previous appointments isn’t faded enough, adding more ink can cause the entire brow to look blotchy and uneven. Let them fade! If you’re ever unsure if you are ready for an “annual” refresher or not, email pictures to me at inkbyash.wi@gmail.com and I will let you know!
DO I NEED A CONSULTATION BEFORE BOOKING?
A full brow consultation is included at the beginning of your appointment. We’ll talk about your goals and which options are best for you. Together we’ll formulate a plan to create your dream brows! I will map out your ideal brow shape with pencil first. I do not do anything permanent until you’re comfortable with the shape!
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
New Client Brows (Initial Session): About 3 hours
Touch-Ups: About 1-2 hours
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
I pride myself on offering quality services at a reasonable rate. Average cost for permanent brow services in Wisconsin range from $200-$800 depending on things like location, years of experience, certifications, etc. When choosing a brow artist, it is important to do your research and make sure you’re choosing based on skill level and quality! A lower price-range doesn’t necessarily mean “bad” and a higher price-range doesn’t necessarily mean “good” as there are many factors that play into how much an artist charges for their work. Make sure you’re comfortable with your artist and don’t be afraid to ask them any questions you may have!
